Police: 44-year-old Decatur man arrested in connection to Saturday's shooting

DECATUR — Police have filed a preliminary charge of attempted murder against Decatur man A.C. Campbell III, accusing him of driving a gunman to a shooting scene and urging him to open fire.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police said the shooting happened around 2:50 a.m. Sept. 28 in the 1400 block of East North Street. A gunman shot into a crowd of people gathered on a front porch and a 51-year-old Decatur man suffered a bullet wound to the right leg.

The affidavit said Campbell, 44, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in a traffic stop executed at Woodford Street and Pershing Road by Decatur Police and U.S. Marshals.

The affidavit citing the grounds for Campbell’s arrest said trouble had broken out before the shooting on the front porch when the gunshot victim offered to help a woman look for her lost wallet. The affidavit said an unknown male accompanying the woman — later identified as Campbell — “got into the (victim’s) face” and yelled an expletive at him before punching him in the head.

The victim managed to overpower Campbell and pin him to the floor until others present separated them. The affidavit said Campbell then left with the woman but returned a short time later with another unknown man who was armed with a handgun.

Writing in the affidavit, Detective Jason Kuchelmeister quotes a witness as describing what happened next. “The witness stated he heard the armed subject asking something to the effect of ‘where he at?’ followed by ‘Mr. Campbell’ stating ‘He is on the porch, shoot him,’” Kuchelmeister said.

“The witness advised the second man then began discharging the firearm in the direction of the porch.”

Campbell and the gunman then fled, Kuchelmeister said, while the wounded victim hobbled to his own nearby home seeking safety. He was later treated at hospital.

Campbell was identified by the witness from a photo lineup. The hunt for the gunman continues. Campbell remained in the Macon County Jail Thursday night in lieu of posting $200,000 bail; prosecutors had asked for $500,000. All preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office.
