DECATUR — The Macon County Coroner has identified the victim of a Saturday fatal shooting in Decatur as 24-year-old Ashton T. Gray.

Coroner Michael E. Day said the Springfield man was pronounced dead in the emergency room of Decatur Memorial Hospital at 9:06 p.m. Saturday. Day said an autopsy conducted Sunday in Bloomington determined Gray suffered "two penetrating gunshot wounds to his torso resulting in severe internal damage."

The victim was found lying in a yard in the 2000 block of East William Street after Decatur police officers responded to reports of shots being fired.

“The victim was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival in the emergency room by ambulance,” Day added in a statement.

David Dickerson, deputy Decatur police chief in charge of criminal investigations, had described police being called to investigate the sound of gunshots on the city's near east side at 8:23 p.m. and then receiving another call about nine minutes later directing them to a man down.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland, speaking Sunday, said extra personnel had been called in to work the case and police continued their investigations. He said officers were looking for any help witnesses and anyone with knowledge of the shooting could provide.
