Decatur babysitter arrested for battery of 4-year-old boy, police say

DECATUR — A Decatur babysitter who left a 4-year-old boy’s back disfigured by severe bruising and welts was arrested Wednesday night and booked on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery, police said Thursday.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police said the alarm had been raised by the child’s mother when she went to bathe him Wednesday evening and saw the injury. The affidavit quotes her as telling police that when she had picked her son up earlier, the 27-year-old male babysitter had told her he’d “lightly struck” her son for being disobedient and “provoking his dog.” The affidavit said the man’s girlfriend was the child’s primary babysitter for the last six months but he took on the role when she was busy.

The mother had photographed the wounds and Officer Jeremy Williams, writing in the affidavit, had seen them as well as rephotographing them himself. “DPD officers observed severe swelling, redness, and welting to the right upper and middle portion of (the boy’s) back area,” he said.

Williams said the injuries were “consistent with being struck forcefully by a hand."

Custody records showed the babysitter remained in the Macon County Jail Thursday night in lieu of posting $30,000; preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office. If the babysitter does make bail, he is ordered to have no contact with the child.
