A sworn affidavit from the Decatur Police Department said the incident happened early Sunday at a house in the 900 block of East Wood Street. The husband, 39, told Decatur police Officer John Doswell that the home invader made the demand for cash and then “proceeded to beat him in the face with his fists.”

Doswell said the victim had fresh cuts to his nose and above his left eye that had been bleeding when police arrived at 6:17 a.m. Doswell said officers quickly obtained a description of the assailant whose unruly hair style soon helped police find him.

“Another DPD officer saw a gray Cadillac being driven by a man with a large messy afro and stopped the car at 1021 North Water Street,” Doswell wrote in the affidavit. “DPD officers escorted the (victim) and his 17-year-old son to the location of the stop and both positively identified (the suspect) as the man who kicked in the door and battered the victim.”

The man was arrested at 6:43 a.m. and booked on a preliminary charge of home invasion causing injury. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office.

The man remained in the Macon County Jail on Tuesday in lieu of posting bond set at $30,000 by a judge. Prosecutors had asked that bond be set at $100,000. If he makes bail, the man is ordered to have no contact with the victim or the victim’s home.
