DECATUR — Police arrested a Decatur man after they said he bit off a large chunk of another man's lower lip during a heated domestic dispute.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police said the incident happened May 15 at an apartment the men share in town. Police found and arrested the 20-year-old man Wednesday and he was jailed on a preliminary charge of aggravated domestic battery; all preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office.

Writing in the affidavit, Police Officer Tim Wittmer said officers had been out investigating an unrelated matter when the victim approached them. “(He) reported his boyfriend had bit his lower lip and tore off a large section of it during an altercation…” said Wittmer. “(The victim) advised he did seek medical treatment for the injury… and received multiple stitches to close the wound.”

Wittmer said he saw the wound which was covered in a large scab and appeared to be in a “poor state of healing.” Wittmer added: “It was apparent a portion of his lower lip was missing and would result in a permanent disfigurement of his lip.”

Wittmer said the injured man did not want to provide any more information for fear his boyfriend would be arrested. But Wittmer said officers spoke to two women who described themselves as friends of the male couple and they said the victim had confirmed the story of what happened with them, speaking after he had just returned home from the hospital.

The man accused of attacking him was still being held in the Macon County Jail on Monday in lieu of posting bond set at $25,000. If he makes bail, he is ordered to stay away from his former home and the victim.
