DECATUR — An 18-year-old Decatur man was arrested Sunday after police say he punched his girlfriend and lit her wig on fire.

A sworn affidavit said Decatur police officers were sent to the 1500 block of North College Street on June 28 on a report of domestic battery.

A 17-year-old victim told officers her boyfriend threw juice at her before striking her multiple times with a closed fist, the affidavit said. She told police the 18-year-old ripped the wig off of her head, threw it on the ground, poured lighter fluid on it and lit it on fire.

The sworn affidavit said officers saw bruises and scratches on the victim's arms and saw a pile of smoking ashes on the sidewalk in front of the residence.

The 18-year-old man was arrested and is facing preliminary charges of arson to personal property, theft and domestic battery, all subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. He was being held in the Macon County Jail on Tuesday in lieu of $5,000 bond.

Sgt. Steve Carroll said it took a while for the department to find the suspect to arrest him, so he was arrested weeks later.
