DECATUR — A 49-year-old man was arrested for strangling and hitting his girlfriend on the head with a skillet May 6 after smoking methamphetamine, documents state.

According to a sworn affidavit, a 48-year-old victim told officers she and the suspect were smoking methamphetamine, and he accused her of cheating on him.

The 49-year-old man kicked his girlfriend in the back of her legs several times, strangled her with both hands to the point of restricting her airflow, punched her in the face and on her back, hit her over the head with a skillet and hit her with a belt multiple times, according to the sworn affidavit.

The 48-year-old woman said she blacked out during the incident, the sworn affidavit said. The officer said the victim had a bruised right eye and lacerations above her left eye and left side of her forehead.

The suspect has been convicted of five prior domestic violence related offenses from 1999 to 2018.

The man was arrested Wednesday at Fairview Park and is being held in the Macon County Jail on preliminary charges of aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery with five prior convictions. All charges are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

The suspect is being held on $200,000 bond.
