DECATUR -- Police said a Decatur driver who had to be shot with a stun gun after he tried to flee a traffic stop Wednesday night was carrying a sawed-off shotgun in his vehicle.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police Officer Brent Morey said the 31-year-old man has a felony conviction and is not allowed to own any type of firearm. Morey described the loaded 12 gauge weapon, found in the trunk, as having had its barrels cut down to a measurement of less than 18 inches from the muzzle to the breech (cutting a shotgun down to less than an overall length of 26 inches is a Class 3 felony). The gun later checked as stolen from Champaign.

The man was booked on preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the State’s Attorney’s Office.
