DECATUR — A 55-year-old Decatur man is pleading not guilty to sexually assaulting a girl younger than 13 on multiple occasions.

Frank E. Sherman appeared in Macon County Circuit Court on Wednesday with his attorney, Todd Ringel. Sherman denies four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault.

He waived a formal preliminary hearing and Judge James Coryell set a pretrial hearing for March 7. Sherman remains held in the Macon County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

A sworn affidavit by Decatur police detective Jamie Wrigley said the child had first spoken of the assaults in December and said they dated back over the summer. She said Sherman would assault her and try to perform sexual acts on various occasions when he could get her alone.

On one occasion he assaulted her in a car while other members of her family had left them briefly together to go shopping, the affidavit said.
