DECATUR — Jason F. Belman was sentenced to three years in prison Tuesday after the Decatur man pleaded guilty to a charge of trying to seduce a 12-year-old girl to commit sex acts with him.

Belman, 33, appeared in Macon County Circuit Court and admitted one charge of “grooming," a Class 4 Felony. Assistant Macon County State’s Attorney Kate Kurtz said Belman used Facebook Messenger to send the child messages including “I flirt with you," “LOL, sex would be fun” and “U promise not to tell and erase our messages.”

The messages had been discovered by the girl’s father and Belman was arrested by Macon County Sheriff’s Office deputies in April. He had initially told police that he had been shown naked pictures of the girl’s younger sister and had come up with the idea of sending her sexually suggestive messages to test the girl’s moral character.

A sworn affidavit about the case from the sheriff’s office then quoted Belman as telling police: “He advised that he knew (she) was underage and that it probably wasn’t the best way to handle the situation.”

Belman had accepted a plea deal negotiated by his attorney, Michelle Sanders, that saw an additional charge of indecent solicitation/aggravated criminal sexual abuse dismissed.

Judge Thomas Griffith also ordered Belman to register as a sex offender for the next 10 years and agreed to recommend that Belman receive substance abuse treatment while he is locked up.
