DECATUR — A Decatur man, caught counting out the cash from a video gambling parlor burglary, was sentenced to three years in prison Tuesday.

Leonde D. Johnson appeared in Macon County Circuit Court and switched his previous not guilty plea to one of guilty after admitting a charge of burglary in a sentence deal worked out by his public defender, Michelle Sanders.

Johnson, 42, was one of three men police arrested for the Nov. 17 early morning burglary of Lacey’s Place, 985 W. Pershing Rd. A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police said Johnson and his accomplices had driven to Springfield after emptying an ATM machine at the business. The affidavit describes the men as busy counting out armfuls of cash when a Sangamon County Sheriff’s patrol walked up to their sport utility vehicle parked on a vacant lot.

Judge Thomas Griffith had told Johnson that, in his case, the crime warranted a prison sentence and anything else would “deprecate the seriousness of the defendant’s conduct.”

Of the two other men charged with burglary in the crime, Antwain E. Johnson, 33, pleaded guilty Aug. 30 to burglary and, based on his record, was sentenced to 24 months probation and ordered to pay $10,325 restitution.

The third man charged, Danny L. Norman, 34, has previously pleaded not guilty to burglary but his case is scheduled for a disposition hearing March 14, which suggests a plea deal is likely.
