DECATUR — A 37-year-old Decatur man was left badly beaten and hospitalized with a collapsed lung Tuesday morning after he was attacked by four assailants, police said.

Detective Sgt. Steve Carroll said the assault happened about 8 a.m. at East Clay and South 19th streets when the victim drove up behind an occupied van that was blocking the road. “He yelled at them to move,” said Carroll. “And then two guys in the van and two guys who were outside the van walked towards him.”

Carroll said the victim said he made a mistake in getting out of his vehicle to confront the men who then attacked and beat him. Aside from the collapsed lung, which Carroll said hospital staff described as having the potential to be a life-threatening wound, he suffered swelling to the right side of his face and road rash scrapes on his right arm.

The men are being sought on aggravated battery charges.
