DECATUR — William S. Dillman Sr., a Decatur man accused of fondling the chest of a girl under 15, appeared in court Wednesday pleading guilty to the sexual exploitation of a child.

Macon County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Griffith sentenced Dillman, 58, to 18 months probation and ordered him to undergo a sex offender evaluation and complete any required treatment. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the next 10 years and have no contact with the victim, or any unsupervised contact with any child under 18.

Dillman made his guilty plea as part of a plea agreement negotiated by his attorney, Gary Geisler, which saw a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse dismissed.

Assistant Macon County State’s Attorney Kate Kurtz said the offense occurred between January and June 2018 after the girl had stayed overnight at Dillman’s home. A sworn Decatur Police affidavit linked to the case said the girl had come into the kitchen to say good morning to Dillman when he lifted her shirt and assaulted her.

The affidavit said the child had not told anyone about what happened until six or seven months after the incident.

She appeared in court to read a victim impact statement and told the judge she was still living with the aftereffects of what had been done to her. “Words don’t even begin to express how hurt I am,” she said. “...I’ve had so many sleepless nights ... it’s hard for me to love others because I can’t love myself. This has been one of the worst times of my life.”

Kurtz told the court the plea deal with Dillman had been discussed with the victim, and approved by her.

Dillman had been due to have a bench trial before Griffith but that was scrubbed after his guilty plea. At an earlier hearing, the defendant had won a victory when his lawyer argued that prosecution plans to introduce a defense witness who said she, too, had been sexually assaulted as a child by Dillman would be too prejudicial.
