Decatur man sentenced to 3 years in prison for role in street shootout

DECATUR — Selley X. Tullison, caught up in an exchange of gunfire on a Decatur street that left two people wounded, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Tullison, 30, previously pleaded not guilty to that charge along with additional charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The case had been set for a pretrial hearing Tuesday but Tullison changed his mind and accepted a plea deal negotiated by his attorney, Caleb Brown.

Appearing in Macon County Circuit Court June 20, Tullison entered his guilty plea and the other two charges were then dismissed.

A sworn Decatur Police affidavit about the case said the incident dated to May 24, 2018, in the 1100 block of East Main Street. Tullison pulled up in a car driven by another Decatur man, Johnnie L. Murphy, 42, and there was an exchange of gunfire with unknown others; a woman was hit in the left knee and Murphy suffered a neck wound.

Macon County State’s Attorney Jay Scott, speaking Wednesday, said Tullison had agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and was helpful. “And there was a video of the incident and the video clearly showed Tullison did not do any shooting,” added Scott. “But he did have a gun.”

Murphy had been pleading not guilty to a charge of attempted first-degree murder but, at the start of his trial June 18, he had changed his mind. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. It was part of a plea deal negotiated by his attorney, Michelle Sanders, that had seen the court delete a firearm enhancement provision of the attempted murder charge, which otherwise would have added another 25 years to the sentence.

Murphy was told he would have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
