DECATUR — Police said a Decatur man suffered serious injuries early Wednesday when he was beaten and robbed while out walking.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the 52-year-old victim was accosted from behind in the 500 block of East Prairie Avenue around 12:15 a.m. He was hit in the back of the head with what he believed was a rock.

“He turned around and was struck again on the left side of his face, presumably with the same object, by a male wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt and a bandanna over his face,” said Copeland.

The victim suffered a broken nose, chipped tooth and what Copeland described as a “pretty significant laceration to the back of his head” that needed four staples to close at hospital.

Copeland said the robber demanded the victim’s wallet and cellphone and took off running with the man’s phone after being told he had no wallet.

Bleeding and injured, the victim then managed to walk to his home in the 1100 block of East Harrison Avenue before police were called.

Anyone with information about the crime can call Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477 or Decatur Police at (217) 424-2734.
