DECATUR — A man said he was shot in the hand by an unknown assailant who demanded money from him after they had played basketball together at Monroe Park on Thursday night, police said.

Detective Sgt. Steve Carroll said the 19-year-old victim told police it began to rain about 7:45 p.m. while he was playing basketball, so he and two men he did not know began walking home, Carroll said.

Carroll said the victim told officers one of the men demanded his money and shot him in the hand at the intersection of North Edward and West Harrison streets. The suspect did not get any money, police said, and the victim was treated at Decatur Memorial Hospital for his injuries.

Carroll said anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Decatur police at (217) 424-2711.
