DECATUR — A secretary at Eisenhower High School in Decatur is pleading not guilty to charges that she had sex with a 17-year-old male student.

Kassie M. Benton, 24, had been due to enter her plea at a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Macon County Circuit Court. But Benton, represented by defense attorney Phil Tibbs, opted to waive a formal reading of the charges and entered her plea Tuesday.

Benton denies two counts of the criminal sexual assault of a victim between and 13 and 17 years old. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 8, and Benton, who lives in Mount Zion, is free after posting $40,000 bond.

A sworn affidavit from Mount Zion Police Department said Benton got to know the student after giving him rides to “early bird class” on about 40 occasions while serving as a school secretary. After Benton's arrest, the Decatur School District said she was suspended from her job, pending the outcome of the investigation into the allegations.

“She told officers she knew the student was 17 years old and had turned 18 in October 2018,” the affidavit said. “She told officers she even wished him happy birthday on his 18th birthday.”

The student is quoted as telling police he had sexual intercourse with Benton in February or March 2018 in her Mount Zion home.
