Shooting scene

Police work in the area of East Waggoner Street and North Martin Luther King Jr. Drive about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

DECATUR — Police said an 18-year-old Decatur man shot in the leg Wednesday night has been transferred to a hospital in Springfield for more specialized care.

The man was shot about 9:15 p.m. in the 500 block of East Waggoner Street, close to where he lives, police said.

Speaking Thursday, detective Sgt. Steve Carroll with Decatur police characterized the man’s wound as “nonlife-threatening” and said it was from a single gunshot.

Carroll said police had been given little information to work with, and he described the victim as uncooperative with detectives. Carroll said the police would welcome hearing from eyewitnesses or anyone with information about the incident.

“If anybody could help us out, we’d appreciate it,” he added.

The police can be reached at (217) 424-2734 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477.
