DECATUR — A Decatur woman battered a store manager during her second attempt to steal more than $500, police said.

A sworn Decatur police affidavit said the 32-year-old woman entered the Family Dollar store, 876 W. Grand Ave., about 8:30 a.m. Monday and grabbed $522 from behind the counter.

The 51-year-old manager, who told police he recognized the woman as a regular customer, set off in hot pursuit across the street and was able to seize all the money back, according to the affidavit.

“He stated that she followed him back to the store and, as he was trying to count the money, she picked up the scan gun for that cash register and hit him with it in the upper left chest area,” officer John Doswell wrote in the affidavit.

The struggle over the money continued with the manager telling police the woman moved behind the counter while still trying to hit him with the scan gun, all the while making grabs for the money.

“He (the manager) stated that she then picked up a curtain rod that was behind the register and hit him with it on his left hand, knocking his phone out of his hand while he was trying to call 911,” Doswell said.

The woman eventually fled empty-handed, and Doswell said a police patrol found her walking in the 1300 block of North Huron Street. Doswell said she was arrested at 9:17 a.m. after giving police a false name. She was then taken back to the store, and Doswell said she was positively identified as the thief.

The woman was booked on preliminary charges of aggravated battery, obstructing a peace officer and theft, which are subject to review by the Macon County State Attorney’s Office.

The woman remained in the Macon County Jail on Tuesday night in lieu of $5,000. If she makes bail, she is forbidden from entering any Family Dollar store.
