Decatur woman gets 4-year prison term for role in burglaries that led to attempted murder

DECATUR — A Decatur woman who took part in burglaries that involved home invasions and a homeowner being shot multiple times was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday as part of a plea agreement.

Mikayla M. Melton, 19, pleaded guilty in Macon County Circuit court to two counts of residential burglary for her role in two home invasions and burglaries in Decatur’s Park City Mobile Home Community the night of Sept. 20, 2017.

A sworn Decatur police affidavit said, as part of the crimes, a 52-year-old woman suffered severe injuries after being shot three times as she tried to flee. The shooter was Damon L. Davis, 20, who pleaded guilty Sept. 12 to attempted first-degree murder and home invasion, and was sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison.

As part of Melton’s plea deal, charges of attempted murder, two counts of home invasion with a firearm and a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm were dismissed by Judge Thomas Griffith. Speaking after the hearing, State’s Attorney Jay Scott said Melton had gone along for the burglaries but hadn’t known Davis would use deadly force.

“And she agreed to cooperate early on in the investigation and, if needed to testify, she will testify,” Scott said. That hadn’t proved necessary in the case of Davis, but may be needed if the trial of a third defendant, Zachary D. Batson, 20, goes ahead. It’s scheduled for Jan. 14, and Batson has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, home invasion involving the use of a firearm and residential burglary.

Scott said another male suspect who was part of the crimes has never been identified or caught.

“Melton had named a person but that didn’t lead anywhere,” he said.
