DECATUR — A Decatur man who told police he tried to wake up a woman by sexually assaulting her was arrested and jailed Tuesday, according to a sworn affidavit.

The 24-year-old man was booked on a preliminary charge of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The affidavit from Decatur police detective Barry Hitchens described the man as an acquaintance of the woman. The incident happened March 15 after the woman said she had taken medication that made her drowsy.

Hitchens said she woke up to find the man with his legs “wrapped around hers” and in the act of sexually assaulting her.

Hitchens quoted the man in the affidavit as saying he was “grabbing her” in an attempt to wake her up.
