DECATUR — A man whom police said attacked a bartender in a dispute over a lost debit card was arrested late Saturday night.

Sgt. Josh Sheets said the man had been drinking at Curly’s Sports Bar, 2683 N. Water St., at about midnight Saturday when the argument started.

“He said he gave the bartender his debit card to pay for his drinks, but it was never returned,” Sheets said.

The argument escalated, and Sheets said witnesses described the 31-year-old man coming around the bar and shoving the bartender so hard lost her balance and fell against the bar.

“He then smacked her in the face and pinned her down and two or three people had to pull the suspect off the bartender,” Sheets said.

The man, who was described by patrol officers as heavily intoxicated, was booked on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
