DECATUR — Police in Decatur are looking for a man who paid for a phone repair with a fake $50 bill.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland with Decatur Police said the incident happened about 3 p.m. Saturday on Ridgedale Drive. Copeland said the 35-year-old victim had fixed a broken phone screen for a customer who handed the fake note to the repairman’s wife. She soon noticed it was a forgery but by the time her husband went outside to confront the customer, he had left.

Copeland said the notes have turned up in Decatur before and are quickly distinguishable by red Chinese or Japanese characters that have been stamped on them. “They are good enough to pass as real if you don’t look too closely at them,” Copeland added.
