Former Decatur school secretary gets 48 months probation for sex with 17-year-old student

DECATUR — Kassie M. Benton, the former Eisenhower High School secretary who had sex with a 17-year-old student, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Benton, 25, was sentenced to 48 months of sex offender probation by Macon County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Griffith. She was also ordered to undergo testing for sexually transmitted diseases, register for life as a sex offender and undergo any treatment as recommended in a sex offender mental evaluation. The judge ruled that she would still be allowed to have contact with her own children.

Her guilty plea was part of a plea deal worked out by her attorney, Philip Tibbs, that saw two earlier charges of criminal sexual assault dismissed.

Prosecuting, Assistant Macon County State’s Attorney Kate Kurtz said Benton committed sex acts with the boy at her Mount Zion home in March, 2018.

A sworn affidavit from Mount Zion Police about the case said Benton had been employed at Eisenhower since August 2015 and had gotten to know the student well, giving him lifts to class on dozens of occasions.

The student was interviewed by police and confirmed the sex acts took place.

A Decatur School District spokesperson did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Benton was not listed as being employed any longer on the school district’s Salary Compensation Report, a payroll list for all staff. Benton declined comment as she left the courtroom.
