DECATUR — A Decatur man who thought he was dry-firing an unloaded shotgun ended up shooting himself in the foot Monday, according to police.

Decatur police Detective Sgt. Steve Carroll said the 31-year-old man had been handling the 12-gauge weapon in or near his apartment in the 400 block of West Wood Street when it went off, injuring the third toe on his right foot.

“He said he didn’t realize it was a live shell and shot himself in the foot,” added Carroll.

The man was treated at Decatur Memorial Hospital and given a notice to appear in court on a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm.

Carroll said police also seized a mixture of six long guns and handguns from the man’s apartment.
