DECATUR — Police say a 35-year-old man was arrested for breaking the window of his ex-girlfriend's sport utility vehicle and stealing her purse as she sat in the driver's seat.

A signed affidavit said the incident happened at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of East William Street. The woman told police that most of the man's upper body was inside of the vehicle as he forcefully took the purse resting between her left leg and the door, the affidavit said.

The woman forced her door open to get the man out of the car and sped away from the scene, the affidavit said. She had been sitting in the vehicle making a phone call before the man broke in, the affidavit said, and she told police that she did not know how he found her or why he stole her purse.

The man faces preliminary charges of vehicular invasion and burglary from a motor vehicle, both of which are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

He was held in the Macon County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond Thursday and is due to be arraigned on July 20.
