DECATUR — Police said a Decatur man told them he was cut twice with a knife Saturday night when he was confronted by an assailant in the 1000 block of West Cerro Gordo Street.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland with Decatur police said the 59-year-old victim said he had been sitting on an upturned bucket in the yard drinking at 9:06 p.m. when he got up to speak the homeowner. His 65-year-old assailant was sitting drinking on the front porch steps and got up to lunge at the victim with what the victim believed was a pocket knife.

“The victim said he grabbed a board to defend himself and officers later saw he had a superficial laceration to his neck, approx. one inch in length and he also had a one-inch laceration under his left armpit that appeared deeper,” Copeland added.

Police later found and arrested the 65-year-old man in the 900 block of West Eldorado Street and he was booked on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery; preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office.
