SHELBYVILLE — Bond was set at $5 million Wednesday in the case of a 24-year-old man charged with the fatal shooting of a pregnant Shelbyville woman.

Deven A. Barger, 24, is being held by the Illinois Department of Corrections after a Wednesday morning arraignment on charges of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child, according to state police.

Police said the charges stem from his involvement in the fatal shooting of his 22-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Samantha L. Cushing, on Monday morning. Cushing was shot at a home on Will Street in Shelbyville.

Later that morning, officers with the Effingham Police Department attempted to take Barger into custody and he fled, leading police on a multi-county chase before being arrested in Christian County, state police said.
