DECATUR — A man who tried to force his way into a Decatur home Tuesday night shot a bullet through a window as a woman and her three young daughters took cover in a bathroom, police report.

The violent incident happened about 9:40 p.m. at an apartment in the 800 block of East Condit Street, according to Decatur police detective Sgt. Chris Copeland.

He said the 28-year-old woman, the children -- aged 12, 8 and 1 -- and an 18-year-old male friend had been sleeping on a couch when the woman was awakened by a knock at the door, which she answered.

“She opened the door to find a man asking where someone else was and she told him she had no idea who this person is,” Copeland said. “She said the man then attempted to enter the apartment but she and her male friend pushed him back out and slammed the door shut.”

Copeland said the woman described the would-be home invader as then driving off but returning a short time later. She looked out the window to see him walking in a parking lot behind her apartment: “She then saw him fire one shot and she grabbed her kids and ran to the bathroom,” Copeland said. “The bullet came through the top left corner of her back window and was later located on the floor."

Neither the woman, her children or the male friend were hurt during the incident. Copeland said the woman told police she had no idea who the man was or why he targeted her home.
