MATTOON — A man has been jailed after police said he abducted a woman in Mattoon, beat her and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.

Richard L. Coffey, 34, of Mattoon was arrested Thursday night on preliminary charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated unlawful restraint, according to a news release from the Mattoon Police Department. Preliminary charges of subject to review by the Coles County State's Attorney's Office.

Police said Coffey is suspected of picking up the woman in his car in Mattoon on Wednesday evening and holding her against her will. He then bound her with duct tape, beat her and sexually assaulted her while holding her at knifepoint, police said.

Police said the woman was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and kept overnight before being released. She's expected to recover, police said.

Coffey is jailed with his bond set at a level requiring $20,000 to be posted for release. The bond was set during a hearing Friday, when Coles County Associate Judge Brian Bower reviewed a police affidavit and ruled that Coffey should remain in custody. The judge also appointed county Public Defender Anthony Ortega to represent Coffey and set his next hearing for Thursday.
