MATTOON — A Mattoon man was arrested after police said he grabbed a child by the neck and slammed the child's head against a floor three times in a domestic battery incident.

In a news release, the Mattoon Police Department said the 6-year-old child was battered Tuesday, Oct. 23. The 30-year-old man was arrested at 5 p.m. the next day at the police station and taken to the Coles County Jail in Charleston.

Deputy Police Chief Sam Gaines said Monday that the child suffered bumps and marks on the forehead, but is physically doing fine now.

The man faces a preliminary charge of aggravated domestic battery, which is subject to review by the state's attorney's office. He posted $2,000 bond and was released from jail Monday.
