DECATUR — A threatening racial message left scrawled in a women’s bathroom stall at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur is being treated as a hate crime by Decatur police.

The message, written in black marker, was reported Monday and was written sometime between 12 a.m. Saturday and and 6:15 a.m. Monday, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland. The message has since been removed.

In a statement issued Tuesday, St. Mary's spokesman, Andrew Dilbeck, said: "At HSHS St. Mary's Hospital, we completely denounce any act of racism and were disgusted when we discovered this vandalism. We immediately filed a police report and are working with the Decatur Police Department to solve this criminal act and hate crime."
