DECATUR — A 22-year-old Mount Zion man pleaded guilty in Macon County Circuit Court on Monday to one count of cruelty to animals for throwing his family's pet Chihuahua.

Tristin R. Jones previously told police that he threw the animal, injuring it, because it wouldn't go outside to use the bathroom, according to records in the case.

Mount Zion police were called to the home by a family member, a sworn affidavit said. Officers examined the dog and noted it could not put any pressure on its front left leg and “the leg appeared to be obviously injured,” the affidavit said.

When questioned, Jones told police he threw the dog because he didn't like the dog, and it wouldn't go outside, the affidavit said.

As part of his plea deal in the case, Jones will be under court supervision for one year, complete anger management classes, must not be the primary caregiver of any animals and must not have contact with pets without the owner's permission.

An attorney for Jones couldn't immediately be reached Tuesday evening.
