HARRISTOWN — Police reports said a man pulled over Saturday morning for speeding near Harristown was found illegally in possession of a handgun and a supply of “explosive” bullets.

A sworn affidavit from the State Police said the 20-year-old Niantic man had been caught traveling 72mph in a 55 mph zone around 8:53 a.m. The trooper who pulled him over said he found a loaded .357 magnum revolver in the seatback pocket of the front passenger seat.

The affidavit said the man told the trooper he carried the gun for his protection. He also admitted he carried the cased weapon with a supply of “explosive ammunition next to the handgun, readily accessible to him," according to the affidavit.

The affidavit described the explosive bullets as being illegal and the man was booked on preliminary charges of the unlawful possession of explosive projectiles and the unlawful use and possession of a pistol by a person under 21 years of age.

Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office. The man is free after posting $10,000 bond.
