TAYLORVILLE — A Palmer man waived his right to a preliminary hearing, entered a plea of not guilty and requested a jury trial during his appearance in Christian County Court on Tuesday.

Darrel H. Sanders, 19, remains jailed on $1 million after he was charged with aggravated battery of a child, a Class X felony. Sanders, who is represented by Christian County Public Defender Greg Grigsby, did not speak during his court appearance.

Christian County State's Attorney Mike Havera said at an earlier hearing that Sanders admitted during a video-recorded interview with law enforcement that he injured his 1-month old daughter by throwing her to the floor multiple times at her mother's home from Feb. 15 to 18.

Havera said a medical exam revealed the baby had multiple skull fractures and bleeding on the brain. She was transferred from Taylorville Memorial Hospital to St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Havera did not have an update on the child's condition Tuesday.

Judge Brad Paisley set a June 18 trail date for Sanders, and a pretrial hearing was scheduled for April 24.
