DECATUR — An 18-year-old Decatur man was arrested after police say he  admitted to using a metal pipe to burn his infant daughter out of frustration with the child, according to a sworn police affidavit.

The man also told police that bruises found on the baby's stomach, legs and feet were from pinches he made with his fingers on his 3-month-old daughter's skin, the court document said.

Police were first notified of the injuries when they were sent to HSHS St. Mary's Hospital in October to investigate a report of child abuse. The infant's mother told police she and the father swapped weeks with the baby.

When the mother took the child back Oct. 6, she found cuts, burns and bruises all over the infant's body.

When police first questioned the man, he said he was holding his daughter while playfully chasing his young nieces and he fell, causing her to be hurt.

A doctor's examination later found the 3-month-old had what appeared to be second-degree burns to her eyelid, neck and arm, as well as bite marks and blisters on her lips and that the injuries were not consistent with the defendant's original story.

Questioned again by police, the man said he was smoking tobacco from a metal pipe and dropped it on the child. The doctor was consulted again and said she did not think that story was plausible either, according to the affidavit.

On Monday, the man was arrested and taken to the police station, where he was interviewed again, police said. He then said he heated up a metal tobacco pipe and burned the baby intentionally "out of frustration," and he also pinched her multiple times, the affidavit said.

The man facing preliminary charges of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated domestic battery of a child. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. He remained in Macon County Jail on Tuesday with bond set at $250,000.
