DECATUR — Police said a 64-year-old Decatur man was treated at a hospital Saturday after he tried to stop a man from pounding on his car and was then jumped on by the assailant.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland with Decatur Police said officers interviewed the victim in the emergency room of HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital where he complained of soreness in his left arm and appeared confused.

Copeland said the victim described how he had been visiting a friend in the 1400 block of North Charles Street around 10 a.m. when an intoxicated man began pounding on his truck. “The victim went over and told the guy to stop beating on the truck and, as he turned around, the guy jumped on his back and hung on," added Copeland.

Copeland said this involuntary piggyback ride went on for several moments until another man intervened and pulled the assailant off. Police have listed the case as one of aggravated battery to a senior citizen.
