DECATUR — An 18-year-old man is facing preliminary charges after Decatur police were sent Thursday evening to the 1400 block of North Jasper Street on a report of shots fired, police say.

Decatur police Sgt. Steve Carroll said officers spoke to witnesses who gave them the suspect's vehicle description, and officers found shell casings at the scene. The incident was reported around 6 p.m.

Officers stopped a vehicle, matching the description, less than half of a mile away in the 1400 block of East Walnut Street, Carroll said. An 18-year-old man in possession of a 40-caliber handgun was arrested and booked in to the Macon County Jail.

He is facing preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and is being held in lieu of $2,500. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state's attorney's office.
