DECATUR — Police accuse a Decatur man of punishing a 7-year-old boy by punching him in the head and wrapping his hands around the child’s neck, warning him not to tell his mother what had happened.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police said the boy was attacked Sunday afternoon while staying with the 29-year-old man. The affidavit said the boy’s 47-year-old grandfather saw the child’s facial injuries the next day and raised the alarm.

Writing in the affidavit, Police Officer Megan Welge said the man told the grandfather the child had run into a doorway. But the grandfather, seeing a huge bruise covering the left side of the boy’s face from his eye to his ear, did not believe the story and called police.

Welge said the boy was questioned and told officers he was punished by the man for leaving his bedroom. The child described being picked up and thrown onto his bed, and said the man put a pillow over his face to cover up his screams, punched the boy and wrapped his hands around the boy's neck.

Welge said the boy’s injuries were consistent with what he said while the man’s door frame story did not add up. The man said the most he had done was shove the boy who had “over dramatized” the incident by colliding with the door frame of his bedroom.

The man was booked on preliminary charges of aggravated battery to a child and domestic battery; preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office. The man remained in the Macon County Jail on Tuesday night in lieu of posting $20,000 bond. If he makes bail, he is ordered to stay away from the child and the address of the child’s mother.
