DECATUR — A 51-year-old Decatur man was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with a Feb. 16 armed home invasion, police said.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland of the Decatur Police Department said Stacey Darrell Bates is accused of entering an apartment, punching a man while holding a gun and demanding money.

Copeland said the victim told police he was asleep in his apartment in the 1000 block of North College Street when he was awakened by a man and woman standing in his room whom he recognized as tenants of a downstairs apartment but did not know by name.

Copeland said the suspect, later identified as Bates, asked the victim for money, and when he told him no, the man punched the victim in the face. The man then demanded money and punched the victim in the face again while holding a golden chrome pistol, Copeland said, and he handed over his empty wallet.

He said the man put the victim in a headlock, causing him to reach into his pocket and give the man the money he had, Copeland said. The woman was present during the incident but never put her hands on the victim, though she demanded money from him numerous times, Copeland said.

Before leaving, the suspect ordered the victim to not tell police or he would kill him, Copeland said.

Officers noticed several scratches and bruising on the victim's face, Copeland said. During a photo lineup, the victim recognized Bates as the suspect, Copeland said.

Bates was arrested at 1:08 a.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of West Leafland Avenue. He was booked into the Macon County Jail on a preliminary Class X felony charge of armed home invasion, which is subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. His bond had not yet been set Wednesday morning.

The victim was unable to identify the woman in a lineup, and that part of the case was cleared, Copeland said.
