Police: Arrest made after 12-year-old boy shot to death in Decatur on Monday evening

At least six police vehicles were seen on North Main Street around 5:45 p.m. 

DECATUR — A 20-year-old man was arrested Monday evening in the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy near downtown Decatur, police said.

A news release from Lt. Brian Cleary of the Decatur Police Department said officers responded to a shots fired call in the 1100 block of North Main Street at 5:02 p.m.

Officers arriving at the scene found that the boy had been shot, and he was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, police said.

As a result of their investigation, police said 20-year-old Avante Flesch was arrested and booked into the Macon County Jail on a preliminary charge of involuntary manslaughter. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. 

Police said no further information would be released Monday night, but additional arrests were possible as the investigation continues. This is Decatur's third homicide this month. Tobby J. Buhs, 22, of Decatur died after being stabbed in a parking lot at North Woodford Street and East Mound Road on Nov. 4. Marcqui Apholon, 25, was shot to death Nov. 8 in the 2100 block of East Whitmer Street.
