DECATUR — A Decatur man was arrested Wednesday night and jailed on suspicion of shooting another man in the chest.
Jerry D. Harris, 35, was booked by police on preliminary charges of aggravated battery with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a weapon in connection with the shooting incident, which dates to July 29. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state's attorney's office.
Harris, who is being held in the Macon County Jail in lieu of posting $200,000 bond, did not have an attorney listed in court documents. Harris is due to be arraigned Sept. 26.
A sworn affidavit by officer Jason Kuchelmeister said the victim, interviewed in the hospital, told police he had been standing in the 1000 block of West Cerro Gordo Street on the afternoon of July 29 when a car pulled up. The victim said he knew the driver as “Little C."
"A verbal argument ensued between them,” Kuchelmeister wrote in the affidavit. “Little C drew a handgun and fired several shots at (the victim) ... one of these struck him in the chest.”
The affidavit said the victim was able to identify Harris from a “electronic photo spread” he was later shown by detectives.
