DECATUR — A brazen burglar walked into a Decatur Mexican restaurant while it was open, grabbed a portable safe from an office, and walked out with it Monday afternoon, police said.

Decatur Police Detective Sgt. Steve Carroll said a manager at the Guadalajara restaurant, 351 West 1st Drive, hadn’t realized at first the safe had been stolen when he arrived Monday night to help close up the business for the day. The safe is used to transport takings to the bank and the manager assumed another staff member had already taken it.

“They found out the next morning that nobody had taken it and so what they did was they reviewed video surveillance,” said Carroll. “And on Monday about 3:30 p.m. it showed an unknown race male entered the business, walked directly to the office past employees and everything, and walked out the office a minute later carrying the safe.”

Carroll said it appears the burglar had a good knowledge of the layout of the building and where the safe was kept.
