DECATUR — A 23-year-old Decatur man was arrested on battery charges Saturday evening after police said he whipped a 6-year-old boy with a wet towel.

Sgt. Josh Sheets said police were called at 4:20 p.m. to a house on the city's south side. The boy’s mother said she had been in the shower when her son came running in crying her boyfriend was chasing him and whipping him. Sheets said the boy’s mother told police the boyfriend was angry because she wanted to break up with him. The boy’s body was marked by reddened welts consistent with a whipping, Sheets said.

The boyfriend left the house after being picked up by his mother but was intercepted by a police patrol before he could get far, Sheets said. He was jailed on preliminary charges of domestic battery and aggravated battery to a child under 13, which is a Class X felony.

Sheets said a records check showed the boyfriend was also wanted on an outstanding warrant charging him with identity theft. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
