DECATUR — A bus passenger with a tracheotomy who couldn’t speak became upset with a Decatur Public Transit bus driver and punched him, police said.
Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the incident happened Tuesday afternoon as the bus was driving along East Pershing Road. He said the male passenger pulled the internal signal to stop the bus but, when the driver pulled over, he didn’t get off.
“He was motioning with his hands, and the driver didn’t know what he was talking about,” Copeland said. “He thought maybe he wanted to be dropped off further down the road, so he drove further eastbound, and the suspect punched him in the shoulder.”
Copeland said the man then got off in the 2500 block of East Pershing, leaving the driver with a sore shoulder. The passenger is being sought on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony.
