DECATUR — Police say a 28-year-old Decatur man hit his 9-year-old daughter numerous times with a belt because she had incorrect homework answers.

Family: Missing Decatur man has been found safe

According to a sworn affidavit, the girl told police her father on Tuesday evening struck her when she would get an answer wrong on her math homework. The girl told officers her legs had purple lines and red marks.

The girl told police her father also hit her several times while she was eating cereal before school, the court document said.

She was treated at a hospital for leg pain. An officer said the girl's right thigh had welts consistent with being hit at least four times.

The man was arrested and booked in the Macon County Jail in lieu of $50,000.

He is facing preliminary charges of aggravated battery to a child and domestic battery, which are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.
