DECATUR — A 34-year-old man was arrested Saturday morning after police say he fired a semiautomatic handgun in a residential area.

A signed police affidavit said officers were called to the 700 block of East Leafland Avenue about 4 a.m. on reports of shots fired. As they arrived to the area, officers heard a single gunshot from behind a home in the 700 block of East Condit Street, the affidavit said.

The officers went to the house and saw a man leaving a bedroom near the house's back door, the affidavit said, and he was detained.

A search warrant was obtained for the house, and officers found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun underneath a mattress in the room the man had come out of, the affidavit said. The gun was loaded with one 9 mm round, and officers found four identical spent shell casings in the back patio area, the affidavit said.

The man faces preliminary charges of reckless discharge of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a felon, both felonies, which are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. He was being held in the Macon County Jail Monday in lieu of $40,000 bond.
