DECATUR — Police said a 21-year-old man has been arrested after a pregnant woman said he struck her with a box fan and tried to strangle her during an argument.

A signed police affidavit said officers were called to the 1200 block of North College Street and were told by the woman that the man also intentionally bent her fingernails back and caused them to break.

Officers found that the woman's left thumbnail was almost completely torn off and was bleeding, the affidavit said.

The man admitted to police that he bent the woman's fingernails back, and did so out of anger and not self-defense. He was arrested Thursday on preliminary charges of domestic battery and aggravated battery, which are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

The man was released from the Macon County Jail on Friday after posting $10,000 bond.
