DECATUR — A Decatur man arguing with his girlfriend repeatedly hit her in the head and face with a 30-pound rubber dumbbell, a sworn police affidavit said.

The 32-year-old man was arrested at 10:30 p.m. Friday after the incident and booked on preliminary charges of domestic battery and resisting a peace officer after police said he appeared drunk and tried to run from them. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur Police Officer Megan Welge quotes the 29-year-old woman, who has children with the man, as describing an argument in their home that turned violent.

“She said (the man) then picked up a 30-pound rubber dumbbell from the closet and he came up and began hitting her in the head/face with the dumbbell as she was lying down, approximately four-five strikes,” said Welge in the affidavit.

“She said this caused injuries to her head and face. She said she had some swollen areas on her scalp, her nose had been bleeding and her upper lip was split on the inside of her mouth which had also been bleeding.”

The woman told police she summoned help from a friend to get away from the house where the assaults had taken place.

The suspect told Welge he had been “tussling around” with his girlfriend and she had struck him with “a weight,” which he said “caused his hand and finger to break” although the affidavit did not describe him as being injured. He is further quoted as saying he threw the woman to the ground during their dispute and “grabbed some of the hair on her head with his teeth and ripped it out of her scalp and then bit her.”

The man was freed from the Macon County Jail after posting $5,000 bond.
