DECATUR — A Decatur man needed 27 stitches at a local hospital to close a wound Tuesday night after he was hit over the head with a dinner plate, police said.

Detective Sgt. Steve Carroll said the 51-year-old man told patrol officers he had been on his front porch in the 600 block of West Packard Street about midnight when he got into an argument with a man who then struck him with the plate.

Carroll said reports from the scene described the victim as “highly intoxicated,” and he was not able to give officers a clear description of his assailant.
